Bangladesh travel tax: what you pay to leave the country

Bangladesh charges a travel tax on trips out of the country and on domestic flights. Under the Finance Bill 2023 rates, you pay Tk 6,000 to fly to the Americas, Europe, Africa, Australia, China, Japan and some other places, Tk 2,000 to a SAARC country, Tk 4,000 to anywhere else, and Tk 200 on a domestic flight 1. Land and sea trips abroad cost Tk 1,000 1. A separate excise duty on air tickets runs from Tk 700 to Tk 4,000 4.

Travel tax rates in force

The travel tax comes from the Travel Tax Act 2003. The Finance Bill 2023 amended its rate table from 1 July 2023 1. The National Board of Revenue (NBR) runs the tax 1.

The rate depends on how you travel and where you go. Air travel has four bands. Land and sea trips to another country have one flat rate 1.

What changed in 2023

The 2023 budget raised the top air rate from Tk 2,500 to Tk 6,000 and the SAARC rate to Tk 2,000, The Financial Express reported on 1 June 2023 3. It added a Tk 200 tax on domestic flights, which had no travel tax before 3.

The finance minister said the rise was meant to cut unneeded foreign trips and raise revenue, Prothom Alo reported on 4 June 2023 2.

The Tk 200 domestic travel tax was still listed among the charges on a domestic ticket in January 2025 4.

The 2025 excise duty rise and the 2026/27 budget

Air tickets carry an excise duty on top of the travel tax. The NBR raised it in January 2025, The Daily Star reported on 11 January 2025 4.

Reports on the budget presented on 11 June 2026 did not list any change to the travel tax or the air ticket excise duty 5. If a later change is announced, the NBR notice is the place to check.

Who does not pay

The law lists these groups as exempt 1,2. The NBR can exempt others by notice in the official gazette 1.

  • Children aged 5 or under 1,2
  • Hajj pilgrims travelling to Saudi Arabia 1,2
  • Blind passengers, cancer patients and some passengers with disabilities 1,2
  • UN officials and their families 1,2
  • Staff of foreign diplomatic missions in Bangladesh and their families 1,2
  • Staff of the World Bank and some development agencies, such as GIZ and JICA, and their families 1,2
  • Airline crew on duty 1,2
  • Transit passengers who stay in Bangladesh 72 hours or less 1,2
  • Bangladeshi airline staff flying abroad on free or discounted tickets 1,2

Children

A child up to 12 years old pays half the rate for the trip 1,3. A child aged 5 or under pays nothing 1,2.

Common questions

How much is the Bangladesh travel tax to Saudi Arabia or the Gulf?

The Gulf states are not in the Tk 6,000 list or in SAARC, so the Tk 4,000 band for other countries applies 1. Hajj pilgrims going to Saudi Arabia are exempt 1,2.

Is there travel tax on domestic flights in Bangladesh?

Yes. You pay Tk 200 on a domestic flight 1. It was still part of domestic ticket charges in January 2025 4.

How much is travel tax to India?

India is a SAARC country, so a flight costs Tk 2,000 1. Crossing by land costs Tk 1,000 1.

Do children pay Bangladesh travel tax?

Children up to 12 pay half 1,3. Children aged 5 or under are exempt 1,2.

Did the 2026/27 budget change the travel tax?

Budget reports from 11 June 2026 did not mention a travel tax change 5.
